Prevention Services and Parenting Education

At Southside Community Services Board Child and Family Services substance abuse prevention and education activities are available to residents in Halifax, Brunswick, and Mecklenburg Counties. These activities are aimed at enhancing the ability of the community to more effectively provide prevention services in the areas of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse. Services are concentrated on the youth and adolescents of the community, with an emphasis on the role of the family in preventing risk behaviors. Some of the programs include anger management and violence prevention workshops, after-school programs, youth leadership training, and fatherhood initiatives.



Prevention and parenting programs include:

• Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is an evidence-based family skills training program, for parents and children, found to significantly reduce problem behaviors, and alcohol and drug abuse in children and to improve social competencies. Eligibility requirement is that parent must have a child between ages six and eleven, and be committed to attend fourteen sessions.
• Too Good For Violence (TGFV) is a universal, school-based violence prevention and character education program that teaches the skills and builds the character students need to treat others respectfully and get along peacefully. TGFV is available for both high school and middle school students.
• Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) is a universal school-based prevention program that reduces risk factors and enhances protective factors related to alcohol, tobacco and other drug use as well as other problem behavior among students. TGFD is available for both high school and middle school students.
• Life Skills Training (LST) is a substance abuse and violence prevention program to help children resist drugs, alcohol, tobacco use as well as other high-risk behaviors.
• Parenting in the Real World is an interactive parenting workshop designed to help parents of children from birth through 4 years of age cope with stress so that they can be better, more effective caregivers.
• Cooperative-Parenting (CP) focuses on the relationship between parents who are living apart, and are jointly raising their children. CP helps to reduce or eliminate conflict, and establish or improve communications between parents.
• Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP Teen) provides skills training for parents dealing with frequently encountered challenges with their children.
• Parenting Wisely is a parenting skills education system. The Parenting Wisely programs are designed to facilitate the learning of necessary skills for the healthy well-balanced raising of children from ages three to eighteen.
