Inpatient Services | Mental Health | University Hospital

The University of Virginia (UVA) Inpatient Units, located at the University of Virginia Medical Center on 5 East, are licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services.



The inpatient capacity is 20 adult beds with services for consumers with acute severe mental illness, geriatric inpatient services and ECT. Services are provided to adults eighteen years and older.



Patients are referred to the unit from the Emergency Department and regional community health clinics. The outpatient services and local psychiatrists also refer. General psychiatric care is provided on coed wards.



Each patient receives a thorough initial medical/psychiatric assessment to make an accurate diagnosis and identify individual needs. In a warm and supportive atmosphere, our well-trained staff of professionals design treatment plans based on patients' individual needs.
