The Ronald McDonald House of Southwest Virginia provides a "home-away-from-home" for families of critically ill children who must leave their home communities and travel to Roanoke for medical treatment. Parents or guardians must travel at least 25 miles for their child's medical treatment. If the House is full, the mileage requirement can extend further. Our goal is to keep families together by relieving the burden of a place to stay and something to eat so they can concentrate on what’s most important, their child.
The House has a capacity of 18 guest rooms, 2 large dining rooms, a kitchen, living room, playroom, family room, library and laundry facilities. There is also an outside playground area for children. Guests must be able to care for their own needs and be able to reside in a communal setting harmoniously with other House families. Volunteers are the backbone of the program and keep the House running smoothly.
A referral is required from the doctor's office for all pediatric outpatient procedures and from the hospital social worker for all inpatient services.
The Ronald McDonald Family Room© is located on the 14th floor of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The Family Room serves as a respite area for adult family members and guests of hospitalized children in a home-like setting where families can relax without leaving the hospital.
